THE CHARACTERS
The people—and presences—that inhabit the Flickering World.
THE WRITER (You)
The Protagonist — A writer investigating his brother's disappearance
A struggling writer who has always lived in his brother's shadow. When his brother—the brilliant scientist—vanishes, he follows cryptic clues to the Sublustrum machine.
Personality
Introverted, observant, and determined. Uses writing skills to decode clues. Emotionally distant but deeply caring about family.
Role in the Flickering World
A visitor and seeker of truth. His memories blend with his brother's, creating the unstable reality of the Flickering World.
EDWARD — THE BROTHER
A brilliant scientist lost in his own creation
A genius scientist who created the Sublustrum machine to explore human consciousness. Obsessed with proving that the mind exists beyond physical death.
Background
Younger than the protagonist but always the prodigy. Their parents favored Edward, creating tension. He never recovered from their mother's death.
His Fate
Trapped in the Sublustrum machine, Edward has become one with the Flickering World. He may no longer wish to leave—or may not even exist anymore.
THE SHADOW
The embodiment of fear in the Flickering World
A dark presence that stalks the corridors of the deepest Flickering World levels. It cannot be fought—only evaded.
Nature
Appears as a silhouette that shifts and distorts. It represents Edward's repressed fears and guilt—and perhaps something else entirely.
Behavior
Drawn to sound and movement. It knows the Flickering World intimately and uses this knowledge to hunt. Silence is survival.
THE GUIDE
A mysterious voice that leads you through the Flickering World
A disembodied voice that speaks in riddles. Is it an AI created by Edward? A fragment of his consciousness? Or something else entirely?
"You seek your brother. But do you seek to find him—or to understand why you abandoned him?"
THE MOTHER (Memory)
Appears as a fragment of childhood memory
A recurring memory fragment of the brothers' mother, who died when they were young. Her presence in the Flickering World is both comforting and haunting.
She appears most often near objects from childhood—music boxes, photographs, and the lullaby that plays throughout the game.
